We are proud to announce that the Czech rights to Johanna Sinisalo’s The Core of the Sun (Auringon ydin, Teos 2013) have been sold to Euromedia. Rights to this critically acclaimed novel were previously acquired by Klett-Cotta of Germany and Actes Sud of France. Euromedia’s other authors include Haruki Murakami and Gillian Flynn.
The Core of the Sun depicts the Finnish Eusistocratic Republic, a kind of North Korea of Europe. Here sex has been turned into a commodity, and women have been bred into two subspecies based on their ability to provide pleasure and bear children.
Helsingin Sanomat newspaper called The Core of the Sun Sinisalo’s best novel since Not Before Sundown (Ennen päivänlaskua ei voi, Tammi 2000), which won the Finlandia Prize. “It deals with themes similar to those in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale,” the newspaper wrote. Sinisalo is the master of “Finnish weird,” and her works have been sold in 19 territories.
