PRAISE FOR THE CORE OF THE SUN:
“An intoxicating book, sizzling to look at and as spicy as a hot pepper.”
Weltexpress (Germany)

“Sinisalo’s latest novel, The Core of the Sun, brings up for discussion a sharp-eyed vision of a country where well-being has been cemented with totalitariasm. (–) The novel launches Sinisalo firmly to the core of the Finnish Weird. (–) For me, the novel was at its best when describing alternative Finland and Tampere in the throes of health fascism. Constructed with great detail, Sinisalo’s alternative society lingers on the reader’s mind.”

German praise for THE LYNX FACTOR:

In her new case, we travel with bodyguard Hilja to the far reaches of Lapland, to a place that looks harmless but turns out to be more dangerous than expected. What is so special about this great text is not only the main character Hilja, for whom this journey will be more than a simple job, but also the spectacular scenery that awaits us in Lapland.  We are incredibly excited about this text and are thrilled to be able to publish it in Germany.

Having already featured in 16 novels and a complete TV series, a new Maria Kallio TV reboot series was launched in Fall 2021 on C More. Lehtolainen’s novels have been translated into 30 languages and have sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide.

And just like the events in Bodyguard, a that takes the heroine Hilja Ilveskero all around Europe, Lehtolainen’s own work takes her to book festivals, exhibitions and other events across the globe.

Leena Lehtolainen has also published outside the crime genre; her book The Charm of Figure Skating was voted sports book of the year 2010 in Finland, and A Life in Six Scenes showed her return to literary fiction.

The Crossing of the Green Dragon is her first title for YA audiences.

In her free time, Lehtolainen enjoys all kinds of music and follows lynx trails in the forests – just like Maria Kallio.

#10 DERAILED (Väärän jäljillä, Tammi, 2008, 378 pp.)

#11 WHERE HAVE ALL THE YOUNG GIRLS GONE (Minne tytöt kadonneet, Tammi, 2010, 342 pp.)

THE BODYGUARD SERIES

A thrilling series with a complex female protagonist, New York-trained bodyguard Hilja Ilveskero.

The newest instalment in the Bodyguard crime series coming in September 2021! This book is the fifth title in the Bodyguard Series:

ILVESVAARA (Bodyguard Series #5 NEW)
deals with secrets of the super-rich in a claustrophobic space in Lapland by Finland’s bestselling female crime writer

Hilja Ilveskero is hired for a secretive nature holiday center of the super-rich in Eastern Lapland called Ilvesvaara. The owner of the place fears the worst security threat comes from the inside. Arriving in Ilvesvaara, Hilja notices that this is not just an ordinary spa hotel, but a luxurious theme park, where wildlife roams freely and is accessible to only eight guests at a time. Millionaire Aku Rautio is also due to appear soon. Hilja is already familiar with the man, as she has once spent a hectic night with him. When Aku then mysteriously disappears everyone in the resort comes under suspicion, including Hilja.

THE EYE OF THE TIGER (Bodyguard Series #4)
When the 92-year-old textile industry magnate Lovisa Johnson offers Hilja a job as her bodyguard, she does not hesitate. The businesswoman lives in a mansion that’s rumored to be haunted, after all. Johnson is childless, but her grandnephews and -nieces – a doctor, an oil industry lobbyist, a security guard and a clairvoyant – are eager for their cut of the inheritance. A combination of a mansion mystery and a fast-paced thriller, the novel is an anticipated new entry in the series.

THE DEVIL’S CUBS (Bodyguard Series #3)
When uninvited guests show up at the wedding of a Finnish businessman and his Russian girlfriend for whom Hilja Ilveskero is working, an international mystery begins to unravel. Hidden truths are revealed, and soon Hilja comes face-to-face with an unthinkable tragedy from her childhood: the murder of her mother.

THE LION OF JUSTICE (Bodyguard Series #2)
Hilja Ilveskero is visiting her lover David Stahl in Italy, where he is hiding from a Belorussian mobster. After David suddenly disappears, Hilja is forced to return to Finland to work for her former client who owns a restaurant. When someone begins threatening the business, Hilja is drawn into a web of international crime.

THE BODYGUARD (Bodyguard Series #1)
In the first book, Hilja’s client conducting real estate business in Russia is killed, and she is suspected of murder. She sets out to prove her innocence – both to the authorities and to herself. Going underground, she soon realizes that someone is after her. Can she trust anyone, even the people closest to her – and what is the price of betraying, or saving, another person?

We couldn’t be more excited to announce that Rowohlt acquires German rights to Leena Lehtolainen forthcoming Maria Kallio novel Ripple Effect (Maria Kallio #15), to be published in August 2020 in Finland by Tammi Publishers. Rowohlt has previously published all the books in the Maria Kallio series.

“With her usual cleverness Leena Lehtolainen combines a gripping new Maria Kallio case with highly relevant social topics such as identity, racism, sexism, and the need for more tolerance.  Perceptive and enthralling!”
– Dinah Sophie Fischer, Editor, Rowohlt, Germany

Maria Kallio Series is the most succesful Finnish book series in the world with over 2 million copies worldwide and been translated into 30 languages.
Only Jo Nesbo has more titles translated to English than Leena Lehtolainen. Already 11 Maria Kallio books are available in English, all published by Amazon Crossing.

Ripple Effect, Maria Kallio #15

Maria is getting ready for her daughter’s graduation when her cat brings her a human ear. She takes it to the forensic lab and doesn’t think any more of it.

Maria and her team are assigned to investigate a rape of a young woman when things start to heat up. The accused rapist is a young man with an immigrant background, which causes a lot of racism and heated discussions in the papers and media. Angry fathers are organizing a street patrol to keep their daughters safe, and when Rahim is released from the police station, his safety is not guaranteed.

Maria and her team are working to solve a new case, but online trolls are targeting them and doing everything to distract them. But when Maria is almost killed by an earless driver, it makes her wonder if all the harassment is related to the case, or could it be something more personal?

Copper Heart sold to Estonia and A Killer’s Girlfriend published in Finland!

We’re very glad to share more news regarding Leena Lehtolainen’s beloved crime novels.

A distinctively female take on the Nordic crime genre by Finland’s #1 bestselling female crime author with over 2 million copies sold worldwide and rights sold in 29 languages, her first Maria Kallio novel was published 25 years ago. Still our favorite lady cop keeps topping bestseller lists and charming readers. “Leena Lehtolainen is the flagship name for ’Finland-Crime’,” wrote Hellweger Anzeiger in Germany.

Lehtolainen’s newest book, A Killer’s Girlfriend, was published in early August to the delight of her devoted fans. It is a short story collection featuring the loved protagonists of her Maria Kallio and The Bodyguard books but expands also into mystery and ghost stories.

How does a librarian become a killer’s girlfriend? Is love stronger than death, and can a child have three fathers? The capturing stories take their characters in unexpected situations and don’t let the reader off the hook.

“Fans of Leena Lehtolainen will find many delightful encounters in these stories, but on the other hand this collection is a brilliant reminder of the fact that ‘the queen of detective novels’ handles many other literary genres in addition to crime,” wrote Amman lukuhetki blog of the collection.

While we’re eagerly waiting for more news from Hollywood, where a production company has optioned the Maria Kallio series to be developed into a TV series, new deals are being struck on the translation sales side. Pegasus in Estonia will continue publishing the Maria Kallio novels with the third book in the series, Copper Heart.

Copper Heart is a brilliant holiday read! It’s really hard to put it down. Copper Heart makes you look forward to the next Maria Kallio cases,“ said Tiiu Kraut, editor at Pegasus, Estonia.

Happy New Year: January’s non-fiction news

Happy New Year! We are back from the holidays, ready for 2018, and glad to share news about our latest deals, this time on the non-fiction front.

As Katja Pantzar puts the finishing touches to her part-memoir, part-guidance Finding Sisu, due to be published in original English in March 2018, new deals have been struck for the book. Jaffa Kiadó and Hojosha acquired the Hungarian and Japanese language rights respectively, which ring in the 13th and 14th deals for the book.

“A book filled with the tips to live an open-minded and joyful life. What’s more, they are all easy and amazingly economical! I’d like to recommend this book to Japanese people who are used to spending money on interior activities, so that they’ll remember the vastness of the sky and how comfortable it is to be outside. Perhaps the onsen (hot spring) -loving Japanese folks might even feel like to jump into cold water after reading this book!?” said Japanese Hojosha on acquisition.

Also, a new book answering to the growing demand for children’s non-fiction, What Is the Night?, written by Laura Ertimo and illustrated by Satu Kontinen, has been sold to the prestigious CITIC Press in China. Over four, beautifully illustrated chapters What is the Night? spins a captivating tale of true facts interspersed with myths and legends: a bedtime book for knowledge-hungry kids and a literary tonic for insomniacs or those afraid of the dark.

Additionally, new foreign editions of our non-fiction titles have been published around the world. The Tove Jansson biography Work and Love by Tuula Karjalainen has been published in Russian, The Sauna Cookbook by Katariina Vuori, Janne Pekkala and Vesa Ranta in Hungarian, and The Charm of Ice – a book on figure skating by Leena Lehtolainen, Kaisa Viitanen and Elina Paasonen – in Japanese.

Let us know if you’d like to receive English language materials for any of these titles by clicking here.
