Celebrating 50 years of Leena Lehtolainen’s literary career

Yesterday Leena Lehtolainen was celebrating her 50 years of authorship in Helsinki, Aleksanteri theater.

Leena Lehtolainen remains one of the most recognisable and celebrated voices in Finnish literature. As Finland’s best-selling female crime author, her work has reached a global audience, with translation rights sold to over 30 languages and with over 2,5 million books sold worldwide.

Her path to literary success began remarkably early: Lehtolainen published her first novel at the age of just twelve. However, it was the introduction of her now-iconic character, the sharp and unconventional policewoman Maria Kallio, in 1993 that propelled her onto the bestseller lists. Kallio has since become a defining figure in Nordic crime fiction, widely credited with challenging and reshaping the traditionally male-dominated genre in Finland.

The Maria Kallio series has established itself as a cornerstone of Finnish crime literature, with each new instalment consistently debuting at the top of the Finnish bestseller lists. The stories have also found new life on screen: the television adaptation KALLIO is currently in its second season with MTV3 in Finland and is available internationally on Amazon Prime in both the US and the UK.

Alongside this acclaimed series, Lehtolainen has created another compelling body of work through The Bodyguard series. These books follow Hilja Ilveskero, a highly skilled, globe-trotting protagonist trained at an elite bodyguard school in New York. Tasked with confronting dangerous adversaries across Europe, Hilja brings a dynamic, action-driven perspective to the genre. Hilja stands out as a bold and modern heroine in a field long dominated by male characters.

Hilja Ilveskero’s story continues to captivate readers, with the sixth instalment, The Snow Leopard’s Heart, published in 2025, further cementing Lehtolainen’s reputation for crafting strong, memorable female leads and compelling international thrillers.

About author

Leena Lehtolainen

Leena Lehtolainen is the top female crime author in Finland: her new titles always head straight to #1 on the Finnish bestseller lists.

Lehtolainen created her successful protagonist, detective Maria Kallio, in 1993. Having already featured in 16 novels and a complete TV series, a new Maria Kallio TV reboot series was launched in Fall 2021 on C More. Lehtolainen’s novels have been translated into 30 languages and have sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide.

And just like the events in Bodyguard, a that takes the heroine Hilja Ilveskero all around Europe, Lehtolainen’s own work takes her to book festivals, exhibitions and other events across the globe.

Leena Lehtolainen has also published outside the crime genre; her book The Charm of Figure Skating was voted sports book of the year 2010 in Finland, and A Life in Six Scenes showed her return to literary fiction.

The Crossing of the Green Dragon is her first title for YA audiences.

In her free time, Lehtolainen enjoys all kinds of music and follows lynx trails in the forests – just like Maria Kallio.
