Since its publication in January, White Shadow (Tammi 2015), part 1 in Katariina Souri’s Black Mandala Trilogy, has received an enthusiastic reception from readers. Many fans have described the book as unputdownable, and critics and bloggers have praised Souri’s ability to generate an uneasy and suspenseful atmosphere.
A mix of thriller and women’s fiction, the trilogy follows Helsinki-based, introverted mosaic artist Mona Malin, who has an inexplicable ability to experience intense and uncontrollable visions of people, whether they be family members or strangers. The story kicks off when a carpenter from whom Mona had commissioned work is found dead, and Mona fears that she may have killed him without her knowledge.
Book 2, Silent Heart (Tammi 2015), will publish later this year, and the final entry, Shattered Face (Tammi 2016), early next year. An English sample of White Shadow will be available in early May!
“Souri, an artist and author, sets up her first crime trilogy patiently and thoroughly. She develops emotional ties between the reader and her characters – before moving her plot into its final culmination. She also has an excellent sense of rhythm, and her language flows naturally and with ease.”
– Pohjolan Sanomat newspaper, Finland
“Mona is an interesting character. She is far from a perfect heroine, and difficult to get close to. She reveals herself simultaneously to the reader and the other characters.”
– Morren maailma (“Morre’s World”) literature blog, Finland
“Souri succeeds especially in generating suspense and mood – in true roller coaster style. On occasion the reader is given a short breather, and then it’s full blaze ahead again.”
– Amusa culture blog, Finland
