A woman, a summer cottage in the winter, and a body of a man
The TV-series has been sold to the Nordic countries and Benlux countries, with negotiations in Greece, France and the UK
They have had a long life together – a life you would not wish on anyone. Or is it reasonable that your spouse manipulates the whole family with his outbursts, decides what you wear, controls your every smile and every sentence and may start shouting in the middle of the street, no matter whether your child is still in the womb or already asleep in the pram?
It was wonderful in the beginning, but the last twelve years have been something else. The fundamentals are there. The man is a successful and respected writer. The woman is a hard-working photographer – or at least she used to be before she met him. Now she focuses on keeping herself together, the everyday life of the family on track and the children safe from the past. Something should also be done about the body of the man, already turning cold.
Nina Honkanen’s third novel moves between the past and the present. It portrays a hellish relationship, but is also a survival story infused with exuberance and black humour. The novel shakes readers to their core, but is also comforting and encouraging.
It is never too late to stop being careful – even if the ice might break at times. Nina Honkanen has written five novels, three non-fiction books, plays for theatre and radio, documentaries, columns and TV series. Now she is writing her sixth novel Heritage, Scent of Bakhoor movie and a play based on her book My Love, Vladimir.
Rock Bottom was merciless, distressing and addictive, but certainly also gentle and how would you put it – humane. The novel reminded me of how hard it is to break away from your acquired habits, try to remember who you ultimately are and learn to like yourself as well. After devouring the novel I felt somehow astonished, because the reading experience was so intense - thank you!
