Finnish authors celebrated in the U.S and Finland

EventsnewsletterSept15The fall season has gotten off to a busy start for many Finnish authors.

At the end of August, right before the end-of-summer Labor Day holiday in the United States, Memory of Water author Emmi Itäranta and Snow White Trilogy creator Salla Simukka spoke at Washington, D.C’s well-known Politics and Prose bookstore, where they had the opportunity to meet local fans.

Memory of Water has been sold in 18 languages, and it was most recently published by DTV/Reihe Hanser in Germany. The Snow White Trilogy, meanwhile, has been sold in 46 territories.

In Finland, the third edition of the Finnish Granta launched last week, featuring the best young voices in the local literature scene. Among the 20 featured authors are Emmi Itäranta and Miina Supinen, whose novel Ray Girl (Säde, WSOY 2013) will be published in Germany by Surhkamp next month.

An English edition of this issue of Granta will be published in conjunction with the Frankfurt Book Fair next month, where Finland is Guest of Honour.

In New York, Scandinavia House in Manhattan hosted its third Frankfurt Book Fair Guest of Honour event: this year the focus was on Finland. In addition to Scandinavia House, the event was made possible in part by the Frankfurt Book Fair, the German Book Office, Finnish Literature Exchange (FILI), the Consulate General of Finland in New York, and the Elina Ahlbäck Literary Agency. See a blog post about the event here.

On display were brand-new or soon-to-be-published World English editions from authors such as Katri Lipson (The Ice Cream Man, AmazonCrossing 2014), Emmi Itäranta (Memory of Water, HarperVoyager 2014), Salla Simukka (As Red as Blood, Amazon Publishing/Skyscape 2014), Johanna Sinisalo (The Blood of Angels, Peter Owen 2014) and Leena Lehtolainen (Snow Woman, AmazonCrossing 2014).

Attendees at Scandinavia House were also given copies of the brand-new Helsinki Noir anthology from Akashic Books, featuring short stories from Leena Lehtolainen and Karo Hämäläinen, among others. In November Lehtolainen will attend the official launch of Helsinki Noir in New York.
