We are happy to share that Tommi Kinnunen has been awarded the Finland Prize! The Finnish Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie presented the prize to ten artists and organizations. This is the award citation for Kinnunen:
Tommi Kinnunen has written six novels on historical subjects, often dealing with silenced and difficult themes. He has especially highlighted the fates of women. In his latest novel Pine Bark (WSOY, 2024), he again gives voice to the forgotten victims of war.
Kinnunen’s storytelling flows smoothly and feels effortless, even though the topics are often heavy. His novels possess a subtle, deeply moving beauty; it is particularly his portrayal of human destinies that can be considered his special strength: he has depicted with touching precision both the blind Helena in The Light Behind the Eyes and the kind-hearted Jussi in The Glass River, who lives in his own world and experiences seizures. Readers have quickly embraced Kinnunen: all his works have been both commercial and critical successes. Tommi Kinnunen’s novels have been adapted for the stage and translated into more than 20 languages.
The Finland Prize was established in 1993 and recognizes career in the arts, an exceptional artistic achievement or a promising breakthrough. The winners receive a prize of 12,660 EUR. The Minister of Science and Culture nominates the recipients annually.
