We are delighted to share that Maria Vilja’s STONE BALLOON has been nominated for the Finlandia Prize 2026 in Children’s and Youth Literature!
The jury praised the book:
“This beautifully vivid yet grounded story sheds light on poverty and social inequality through a child’s eyes. It takes readers into the difficult emotions sparked by unfairness, exclusion, and going without, while exploring how children process these experiences. At the same time, the book conveys that the everyday magic of childhood can bring joy and meaning even in challenging circumstances, although creative and resourceful solutions alone cannot resolve the broader structural inequalities at play.”
Finlandia Prize is the most prestigious literary award in Finland, worth 30 000 euros. The winner will be announced on November 26. Warm congratulations to Maria Vilja!

Panu Has the Finest Balloon of All. This honest picture book brings a ray of light even to life’s greatest worries.
Panu wants a balloon, but his mother says they can’t afford one. Panu thinks that’s unfair. Why does his friend Rami get to have a balloon of his own, and a scooter, too? In the midst of his disappointment, Panu finds a very special stone: large, beautiful, and perfectly round. It’s almost as splendid as the showy helium balloons at the supermarket. But can a stone really be as good as a balloon?
Award-winning author-illustrator Maria Vilja’s beautiful artwork captures both the joy of spring and the muddy moments of sorrow. The Stone Balloon does not shy away from difficult questions.
