Annukka Salama Honoured with the First Class Gold Medal of Merit

Author Annukka Salama has received the First Class Gold Medal of Merit from the city of Tampere. The award was presented at the Tampere Day celebration at City Hall on 1st of October 2026, as the city marked its 247th anniversary.

Salama was honoured for her achievements, particularly as a pioneer in children’s literature. A Tampere-based author, she has published several acclaimed works, including her debut novel Käärmeenlumooja, which was nominated for the Topelius Prize in 2013. In her work, Salama has explored a wide range of themes relating to young people’s identity, human relationships and social issues.

The awards are presented annually on Tampere Day, and was first established in 1959.

Annukka Salama

Annukka Salama (b. 1980) is a Finnish author from Tampere. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees. In addition, she has studied fashion design and architecture.

Salama’s young adult novels are known for their fast-paced plots and addictive romances. Her stories also give space to LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent perspectives. Salama’s books enjoy wide popularity among readers and have consistently performed well in annual Blogistania awards voted by book bloggers. In 2024 and 2025 she won the Queer Book of the Year Award. In 2026 she won the Thank You for the Book award for her YA title The Melting Point.
