Oskari Sipola

Oskari Sipola (b. 1984, Helsinki, Finland) graduated with a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University’s School of Art and Design in 2012, majoring in directing for film and television.

He has directed three feature films, August (2011), Urban Family (2015), and The More Loving One (2025) and 50 episodes of television for shows including Welcome to Texas, A New Day and Wet Shoes, as well as 19 short films — among them Wings and Teeth (2009), which won the grand prize at the Písek International Film Festival — and numerous music videos and commercials. He wrote and directed the hit series HasBeen (2018–2019) for the Finnish Public Broadcaster Yle, and wrote and produced the series Bull by the Horns (2021) for Elisa Viihde Viaplay, the most watched show on the platform in the year of release. In 2026 Sipola was selected as one of ten screenwriters to join the Nordic NEST initiative between The Five Nordics film funds and MOIN Film Fund in Germany, developing projects directly for international co-production.

Sipola owns and runs the boutique production company Welhofilmi. He is active in public film policy, served as president of the Finnish Film Directors’ Association SELO ry from 2020 to 2022, and now serves as president of the copyright organisation for actors, directors and screenwriters, Avate. He represents film directors on the advisory board of the Finnish Film Foundation.

Sipola lives in Herttoniemi, Helsinki, and has a five-year-old child.
