U.S and UK accolades for Johanna Sinisalo and Emmi Itäranta!

Itaranta_Sinisalo_Dec2014Two of Finland’s most imaginative authors, Johanna Sinisalo and Emmi Itäranta, have drawn serious international attention in late 2014.

Johanna Sinisalo’s The Blood of Angels (Teos 2011), published this fall by Peter Owen, has been praised by Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly, and received starred reviews from Library Journal and Booklist.

In addition, well-known science fiction and fantasy site Tor.com recently published an excerpt of The Blood of Angels and hosted a book giveaway that drew a slew of enthusiastic responses from readers.

“At the intersection of science and fiction, award-winning Finnish author Sinisalo digs deep into a character who’s searching for answers about his child, his life, and what may come after. Stunning prose takes the reader down a twisting path between gritty ecoterrorism and another world, with winged messengers leading the way.”
Library Journal, starred review

“Sinisalo juxtaposes one man’s personal grief with impending ecological disaster in this compelling and intimate rumination on animal rights, world food supply, and the indispensable role of bees to our environment…The story is told with a quiet, literary precision.”
Booklist, starred review

Sinisalo’s latest novel, The Core of the Sun (Teos 2013) was published in Germany by Klett-Cotta this year, and is scheduled for a 2015 World English publication by Grove Atlantic.

Meanwhile, The Guardian has named Emmi Itäranta’s speculative fiction debut Memory of Water (Teos 2012), published this summer by Harper Voyager, one of the year’s best science fiction books. Memory of Water has previously received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. Itäranta’s independent follow-up, City of Woven Streets, is slated for a 2015 publication.

“Too few non-Anglo-phone genre writers make it through the language barrier and into our bookshops. One who has is Emmi Itäranta, whose poetic and melancholy debut Memory of Water (Harper Voyager) was originally published in her native Finnish. Itäranta, now resident in Kent, translated it herself into flawless English. But how many non-Anglophone writers have such polylingual skills?”

Survival Game by Markku Karpio nominated for the Topelius Prize!

Karpio_Topelius_Dec152014Beloved YA author Markku Karpio has been nominated for the prestigious Topelius Prize for his novel Survival Game (Tammi 2014), a story of trauma, resilience and friendship set in the Nordic wilderness. Karpio is a second-time nominee.

Recognizing the year’s best youth novel, the Topelius Prize has been awarded since 1946. Previous honorees include Snow White Trilogy author Salla Simukka. The winner will be announced on January 14th, 2015.

Jury motivations:

“In a small town everyone used to be friends, but the closing of a local factory has resulted in splits between both young people and adults: there are those who kept their jobs, those who became unemployed, and those who did the firing. Only “winners” and “losers” remain, and friendships are now redefined based on these divisions. When the local boy scout troop leaves on a traditional winter survival hike, they notice that the old rapport within the group is gone, and emotions reach a volatile boiling point.”
– Topelius Prize 2014 jury

About Survival Game:

John Green meets Lord of the Flies in the Nordic wilderness.

Suffering from life-threatening burns at the Korpisalo hospital, Ozzy can’t hear, see or smell anything; he knows only that his mother, little sister and father are all gone. Ozzy’s father, the HR director of a local paper machine manufacturer, suffered a breakdown during a brutal round of layoffs and burned his house down, killing himself, Ozzy’s mother and his little sister. During brief moments of clarity Ozzy tries to turn his thoughts to his former boy scout troop on their annual winter hike – a trek that turns into a dangerous game of survival in freezing temperatures. Hunger and cold add to the stress – and above everything hovers a worry over Ozzy’s fate.

About the author:

Markku Karpio (b. 1961) has authored both YA and adult novels and numerous short stories, columns and articles, as well as a four-part television series. His novel Storm Warning (Myrskyvaroitus, Otava 2008) was nominated for the Topelius Prize. Minna Lindgren’s Escape From Twilight Grove nominated for the Runeberg Prize!

Lindgren newsletter Oct232014Minna Lindgren, whose Twilight Grove Trilogy has generated major international buzz this year, has been nominated for the highly regarded Runeberg Prize for Book II in the trilogy, Escape from Twilight Grove (Teos 2014).

Rights to the Twilight Grove Trilogy, a warm and satirical mystery series that follows a group of bright, spirited and inquisitive 90-something ladies in a Helsinki retirement home, have been sold in 8 languages. The World English acquisition of the trilogy by Pan Macmillan was recently noted in The Independent!

The Runeberg Prize is named after Finland’s national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. The winner will be announced on Runeberg Day, February 5th.

About the Twilight Grove trilogy:

In Death in Twilight Grove (Teos 2013), Siiri, Irma and Anna-Liisa discover that their home, a Helsinki retirement community called Twilight Grove, is an optimal environment for both smaller swindles and larger criminal activities. The first entry in the series is a suspense novel into which friendship and love, both of which are still possible for the oldest members of society, bring a sense of warmth.

The second entry, Escape from Twilight Grove (Teos 2014), sees our heroines moving to an apartment in the Hakaniemi neighbourhood as roommates. A fishy plumbing renovation at Twilight Grove evokes suspicions of more crimes taking place, but the real crimes may actually be happening elsewhere. The death of two people close to them forces these friends to contemplate questions of euthanasia and terminal care.

The final part in the trilogy, The end of Twilight Grove (Teos, 2015), marks a return to the retirement community. But the place no longer feels like home, and has turned into a state-funded, technology-driven pilot project in elderly care. The conclusion brings together characters lost along the way, and murky details are brought to light. Legal justice is also served – in unexpected ways.

About the author:

Minna Lindgren (b. 1963) is a freelance journalist and columnist known for her whimsical writing style and fearless approach to topics as strange as opera and death. In addition to novels, she has authored nonfiction books on classical music. In 2009 Lindgren won the Bonnier Journalism Prize for her article entitled “Father’s Death” (“Isän kuolema”).

About the Red Abbey Chronicles by Maria Turtschaninoff:

Maresi, Book I: The Red Abbey, located on the island of Menos, is a refuge and a community for women and girls. One day Jai, a frightened girl, arrives on the island. It is gradually revealed that Jai is running from her father’s senseless fury; she has seen her sister get buried alive for speaking to a young man, and now her father and a crew of thugs are after her. The bravery of Maresi and her friends is put to the ultimate test when they have to fight to defend both Jai and their community.

A prequel to Maresi, Book II (Schildts & Söderströms) will tell the story of the First Sisters, and how they came to flee a harem in the faraway Eastern Lands and eventually establish the Red Abbey.

A sequel to Maresi, Book III (Schildts & Söderströms) will follow Maresi after she leaves the Red Abbey and sets out to establish a school in the oppressed province of Rovas.
