Rights sold in Romania to Finlandia Junior Prize winner Maresi by Maria Turtschaninoff!

Maresi_newsletter_Nov202014We are excited to announce that Romanian rights to Maresi (Schildts & Söderströms 2014) by Maria Turtschaninoff, which won the Finlandia Junior Prize earlier this month, have been acquired by Editura Univers. Among other titles published by Editura Univers are works by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, J.D. Salinger and Jostein Gaarder.

“Reminiscent of The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, Maresi draws its inspiration from real problems encountered by real women today. The story is captivating and empowering, and contains some of the most likable and endearing female characters we have seen in a YA book in the last decade. The reader feels like hugging these girls and protecting them to make sure that no-one ever hurts them again. This book also addresses the magic of reading and knowledge – a message we should send to teens.”
– Editor Diana Crupenschi, Editura Univers

Please contact the Agency for a full English text of Maresi!

“Fierce and gentle, violent and tender, poetic and full of action – not one or the other, but both. Maresi instills a sense of will, hope and optimism in a reader and encourages her to walk towards the light without fear.”
– Director and writer Johanna Vuoksenmaa in the Finlandia Junior Prize announcement

About the Red Abbey Chronicles by Maria Turtschaninoff:

Maresi, Book I: The Red Abbey, located on the island of Menos, is a refuge and a community for women and girls. At the Red Abbey everyone is given the freedom to pursue and develop their own talents and areas of interest. Maresi, the main character and narrator, has realized that reading and learning are the two things closest to her heart.

One day Jai, a frightened girl, arrives on the island. It is gradually revealed that Jai is running from her father’s senseless fury; she has seen her sister get buried alive for speaking to a young man, and now her father and a crew of thugs are after her. The bravery of Maresi and her friends is put to the ultimate test when they have to fight to defend both Jai and their community.

A prequel to Maresi, Book II (Schildts & Söderströms) will tell the story of the First Sisters, and how they came to flee a harem in the faraway Eastern Lands and eventually establish the Red Abbey.

A sequel to Maresi, Book III (Schildts & Söderströms) will follow Maresi after she leaves the Red Abbey and sets out to establish a school in the oppressed province of Rovas.

Finlandia Prize winner: They Know Not What They Do by Jussi Valtonen!

Valtonen_newsletter_Nov272014We are beyond thrilled to announce that author Jussi Valtonen’s They Know Not What They Do (He eivät tiedä mitä tekevät, Tammi, September 2014) has won the Finlandia Prize. Worth 30,000 euros, the Finlandia Prize is the country’s highest-profile literary honour. We wish Jussi our warmest congratulations!

An English sample of They Know Not What They Do will be available in December.

Professor Anne Brunila, who selected the winner, said:

They Know Not What They Do is a mind-blowing work. It illuminates modern life with a rare sense of perception, without pointing fingers or moralizing. The reader finds the moral in him-or-herself. Ecoterrorism, animal activism, academic research, new technology with its digital universes, and a future in which reality and behaviour can be altered with technology and medicine, are all put into the spotlight.

Valtonen describes modern phenomena at a breath-taking speed; his outstanding storytelling keeps the reader in its grasp. The narrow-mindedness of the Finnish academic world and society, as well as the American way of life, are given equal scrutiny. Relationship entanglements, misunderstandings and the logic of a broken telephone lead both the characters and the reader repeatedly astray. ‘It seems that the way things really were didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered was how they looked.’

Valtonen’s book opens new doors into Finnish literature, both in terms of content and in terms of style. I have never read this kind of a depiction of modern times from a Finnish author. The book combines, in an astonishing way, perceptive relationship descriptions, deep moral and ethical meditation, science fiction and suspense.”

Jonathan Franzen is one of Jussi’s favourite authors, and it shows here – in the best way,” says Editor Hannu Harju at Tammi.

Praise:

“For a long time we have wished for a bold literary curveball – a big, new, Finnish contemporary novel. And here it is…[They Know Not What They Do] doesn’t crystallize into just one novel; at the core of its narrative are the morals of scientific research, the disappearance of privacy and the commoditization of life, as well as the dismantling of the nuclear family, the internal tensions of a newly formed family, and the growing pains of children who ultimately turn against their parents…the end result is a comprehensive picture of our time and a diagnosis of what is ailing this brave new world.”
Helsingin Sanomat newspaper, Finland

About They Know Not What They Do:

When professor Joe Chayefski’s neuroscience lab in Baltimore is attacked by animal rights activists, he doesn’t connect the dots at first. But when he receives a phone call from Alina, his Finnish ex-wife, he begins to gradually realize that the threats on his career and new family are connected to Samuel, the son he left behind in Finland two decades ago. Joe soon learns that his son’s life has gone badly astray, and that Samuel has devoted himself to extreme animal rights activism. Samuel is now somewhere in the United States, but neither Alina nor the authorities know his exact location. Joe realizes that he has to take action to protect his wife and two daughters from his estranged son, by any means necessary.

With Joe, Alina, and Samuel intensely struggling to understand an increasingly confusing world, They Know Not What They Do offers readers piercing psychological insight and a dystopian satire of a world in which nothing is private and everything is for sale.

“I wanted my novel to have as wide a societal scope as possible; my aim was to satirize the way in which we live from a multitude of angles,” Valtonen said in an interview with Aamulehti newspaper this week. “I feel a sense of confusion and helplessness when faced with our complicated world.”

About the author:

Jussi Valtonen (b. 1974) is an author and psychologist from Helsinki. He has studied neuropsychology in the United States and screenwriting in the UK. His previous works include two novels and a short story collection. His novel, Carried by Wings (Siipien kantamat, Tammi 2007) was given second place in Bonnier’s novel competition, and received a warm reception from both critics and bloggers.

More rave reviews for The Ladies of Seven Brothers by Riina Katajavuori

KatajavuoriNewsletterSept12014Riina Katajavuori’s The Ladies of Seven Brothers (Wenla Männistö, Tammi 2014) continues to draw rave reviews from critics, many of whom are calling it one of the year’s best Finnish novels. Reviews are also pouring in from Finland’s active literary blogger community.

Several adaptations of The Ladies of Seven Brothers, including a stage version, are in the works.

Inspired by Finland’s most famous literary work, Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers (1870), The Ladies of Seven Brothers is a satirical and spirited depiction of youth, motherhood, and of growing up in modern-day Helsinki.

Recent praise for The Ladies of Seven Brothers:

“Reading this book was a mind-blowing experience. Everything in it was so magnificent and so successfully executed that I think I read the entire book with a silly smile of infatuation on my face…there’s a lot I would like to say about this book, but I can’t find words big enough. This is perfect.”
Kirjojen keskellä (“Surrounded by Books”) literature blog, Finland

“Katajavuori’s book has been called ‘a delicious update on a classic’ – and it truly is. The Ladies of Seven Brothers is a refreshing read for both young people and adults. Whether or not one is familiar with Kivi’s famous Jukola brothers doesn’t really matter.”
– Kirjat kertovat
(“Books Tell”) literature blog, Finland

“An audacious and hilarious update on Seven Brothers that should also be of interest to young readers.”
Implisiittinen lukija (“The Implicit Reader”) literature blog, Finland

“[Katajavuori] has done the same thing as Kivi in his time: he used the same unrefined language that ordinary people used, and riled up the literary elite. I giggled happily inside the trap she had set for me.”
Kyyti library and literature blog, Finland

About the book:

All the guys are crazy about 17-year-old Wenla Männistö, who is whole-heartedly enjoying her youth, playing in a rock band and flirting with the seven slacker brothers next door. Her mother is the practical but enigmatic midwife Marja Männistö, who has raised Wenla on her own.

Bringing her own voice into the narrative is Alli Jukola, the deceased mother of the Jukola brothers, who contemplates the past and watches her boys while lounging on the edge of a cloud. We also hear from straight-talking washer Kajsa Rajamäki and Wenla’s best friend Ansku Seunala, who believes in angels. All the while, the seven brothers of Jukola trade bad jokes in front of the TV and cause mischief in the neighbourhood.

The Ladies of Seven Brothers is a modern-day deconstruction of Finland’s most famous literary work, Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers (1870), told from a female perspective.

Finlandia Junior Prize winner: Maresi by Maria Turtschaninoff!

Maresi_newsletter_Nov202014version2We are extremely happy to announce that Maria Turtschaninoff has won the 2014 Finlandia Junior Prize, the country’s best-known literary award given to a children’s or YA title, for her literary fantasy novel Maresi (Schildts & Söderströms 2014), Book I in the Red Abbey Chronicles. Given by the Finnish Book Foundation, the prize is worth 30,000 euros.

We warmly congratulate Maria Turtschaninoff, and are thrilled to conquer the world with her and Maresi! Please contact the Agency for the full English manuscript, available on December 1st.

In the prize announcement Maresi was described as:

“Fierce and gentle, violent and tender, poetic and full of action – not one or the other, but both. It instills a sense of will, hope and optimism in a reader and encourages her to walk towards the light without fear.”

Director and writer Johanna Vuoksenmaa, who selected the winner, also said:

”[The book] took me to a place where I had never been. It transported me to a wholly original world with its own rules and didn’t let go. The scents, the sounds, the tastes, the light, the believable images that embraced all the senses and didn’t exist before this book, were left whirling around in my mind long after the story had ended…this exceptionally sharp fantasy novel not only tells a wonderful, wise and exciting story, but it also corrects, in a delightful way, the genre divide of fantasy literature that had remained a bit tilted after Tolkien. Maresi helped me remember that even today there are places in the world in which books aren’t looking for new readers and knowledge isn’t distributed to young, thirsty minds. People’s opportunities to acquire knowledge and to learn are limited, and human rights are suppressed.”

Maria Turtschaninoff (b. 1977) works full-time as a writer. Her sources of inspiration are Diana Wynne Jones, Lloyd Alexander, Philip Pullman, Michael Ende, J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, C.S. Lewis and many others. She has become known for her ability to craft rich, historically inspired worlds that contain elements of mythology and fairy tales. She has been awarded the Society of Swedish Literature Prize twice, and has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. In October she was given the Swedish YLE Literature Prize.

Finlandia Prize nomination for They Know Not What They Do by Jussi Valtonen!

Valtonen_newsletter_Nov142014We are excited to announce that author Jussi Valtonen’s latest novel, They Know Not What They Do (He eivät tiedä mitä tekevät, Tammi 2014) has been nominated for the Finlandia Prize, the country’s most prestigious and best-known literary award. Established in 1984 and given annually, the prize is worth 30,000 euros.

Praised by critics and readers, They Know Not What They Do is a sweeping, multilayered story of family conflicts, the ethics of science and the search for identity in an impersonal society.

Jury motivations:

“A chilling story of a world in which the supply of information grows at a dizzying speed, but people’s understanding of one another does not improve; our actions are directed by suspicions, a lack of awareness and primitive instincts. Jussi Valtonen describes, with a great sense of perception, the culture shock experienced by a leading American researcher in the cold and inward-turning Finland. He also cleverly weaves together both large and small current events. The skilfully woven plot thickens subtly and inevitably towards the finale that in its fatefulness resembles a classic tragedy. They Know Not What They Do is an arresting study of the relationship between science and ethics, and of people’s inability to communicate with one another.”
– Finlandia Prize 2014 jury

About They Don’t Know What They Do:

When professor Joe Chayefski’s neuroscience lab in Baltimore is attacked by animal rights activists, he doesn’t connect the dots at first. When he gets an unexpected phone call from Alina, his ex-wife in Finland, nothing immediately suggests that the threats on his career and new family are connected to Samuel, the son he left two decades ago in Finland and has never gotten to know. But Joe soon learns that his son’s life has gone badly astray, and that Samuel has devoted himself to extreme animal rights activism. Samuel is now somewhere in the United States, but neither Alina nor the authorities know his exact location.

Joe realizes that he has to take action to protect his wife and two daughters from his estranged son, by any means necessary. By depicting its three main characters in an intense struggle to understand an increasingly confusing world, They Know Not What They Do offers readers both piercing psychological acumen and a striking dystopian satire of a neuro-digitalized Western society in which nothing is private and everything is for sale.

Praise:

“For a long time we have wished for a bold literary curveball – a big, new, Finnish contemporary novel. And here it is…[They Don’t Know What They Do] doesn’t crystallize into just one novel; at the core of its narrative are the morals of scientific research, the disappearance of privacy and the commoditization of life, as well as the dismantling of the nuclear family, the internal tensions of a newly formed family, and the growing pains of children who ultimately turn against their parents…the end result is a comprehensive picture of our time and a diagnosis of what is ailing this brave new world – nothing more, nothing less.”

About Book I: The Sinking World (ca. 400 pp.)

After the tragic events of what has become known as The Day of Destruction – a day when they were intended to die along with their families – Charlie, Sadie, Liu, Raquel and Ingela find themselves on the high seas all alone. While a group of girls living on their own isn’t the norm in the 1780s, the Storm Sisters are starting to realize that making the impossible possible is what they do best.

The girls strive to maintain their legacy as part of a covert and ancient organization known as The Storm. Their primary mission, however, is to survive so that they can find out what really happened to their parents. Amidst pirates, hurricanes and other hidden enemies, this is not an easy task.

About Book II: The Frozen Seas

The girls continue their quest toward the frozen seas of the North. New information is revealed as the Storm Sisters find out shocking secrets about their past. But will the girls be able to survive on their own? And who are their real enemies?
