Rights to Snow White Trilogy sold in Thailand: 39 total territories!

Simukka_Japan_sale_newsletter_Feb122014We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Nanmee Books in Thailand has acquired rights to Salla Simukka’s YA phenomenon, The Snow White Trilogy. Rights to the trilogy have now been sold in 39 territories, an unprecedented success in Finnish literature.

Earlier this month, rights to The Snow White Trilogy were sold to Nishimura in Japan, while the third entry in the series, As Black as Ebony (Musta kuin eebenpuu, Tammi February 2014), was published to an enthusiastic reception in Finland.

“I liked it even better than As Red as Blood. As Black as Ebony sucked me in from the beginning. After reading it I can sincerely say that I’m going to miss Lumikki Andersson,” said Anna minun lukea enemmän (“Let me read more”) literature blog.

“As Black as Ebony is stylishly constructed entertainment, but it also addresses weightier issues. In narrating Lumikki’s tragic family history the author reminds us of the importance of communication and openness,” praised Etelä-Saimaa newspaper.

The Snow White Trilogy tells the story of Lumikki Andersson, a fiercely self-reliant and headstrong 17-year-old living in the city of Tampere in Finland. As she comes face-to-face with criminal operations and life-threatening situations, she is also forced to examine her own dark side. A lone wolf, she is like Lisbeth Salander for the YA readership.

Salla Simukka (b. 1981) is a translator and author of juvenile fiction. She is the winner of the 2013 Topelius Prize for the best Finnish youth novel for Without a Trace (Jäljellä, Tammi Spring 2012) and Elsewhere (Toisaalla, Tammi Fall 2012), as well as the 2013 Finland Prize awarded in recognition of a significant career in arts, an exceptional artistic achievement, or a promising breakthrough.

The Core of the Sun nominated for 2013’s best science fiction book

sinisalo_070114We are thrilled to share the news that Johanna Sinisalo’s The Core of the Sun (Auringon ydin, Teos 2013) has been shortlisted for the prestigious Tähtivaeltaja (“Star Traveller”) award. Recognizing the previous year’s best science fiction book published in Finland, the award is given out by the Helsinki Science Fiction Association. Past winners have included Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Philip K. Dick’s The Man in The High Castle. Emmi Itäranta’s Memory of Water was among last year’s nominees. The first Tähtivaeltaja award was given in 1986.

Finlandia Prize-winning Sinisalo is one of Finland’s most successful authors, and her works have been translated into 19 languages.

“[The Core of the Sun] is a chillingly intelligent dystopia about a health-fascist version of Finland that oppresses women,” the jury said.

Other nominees are Iain M. Banks (Transition), Lauren Beukes (The Shining Girls), Hugh Howey (Wool) and Peter Watts (Blindsight). The winner will be announced in May.

The Core of the Sun depicts the Finnish Eusistocratic Republic, a kind of North Korea of Europe. Here sex has been turned into a commodity, and women have been bred into two subspecies based on their ability to provide pleasure and bear children.

Anna-Lena Laurén nominated for Finland’s largest journalism prize

LaurenFeb192014We are proud to announce that reporter and nonfiction author Anna-Lena Laurén (b. 1976) has been nominated for Finland’s most prestigious award in journalism, Suuri Journalistipalkinto (“The Great Journalism Prize”), established by Bonnier. She is one of three nominees in the category of Journalist of the Year. Winners will be announced in a live television broadcast on March 26.

“Moscow correspondent Anna-Lena Laurén describes, with expertise and empathy, the current state of Russia and everyday life in the former Soviet Union…her stories paint an exceptionally multifaceted portrait of life and problems in the region,” the jury said.

Known for her empathetic and in-depth reporting, Laurén has been the recipient of 2002’s Topelius Prize, given to a Swedish-Finnish journalist, the State Journalist Award in 2010 for news reporting and the 2013 journalism prize awarded by the respected Suomen kuvalehti current events magazine.

In her nonfiction works Laurén practices immersive and hard-hitting current events journalism with shades of Elizabeth Gilbert’s and Barbara Ehrenreich’s first-person style. Her latest book, The Unknown Price of Freedom (Frihetens pris är okänt, Schildts & Söderströms 2013), examines life in Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan nearly a decade after revolutions took place in these three former Soviet states. An English sample translation is now available!

Her other works include Since I Came to Moscow (Schildts & Söderströms 2010), in which she narrates her life in Russia as a foreign correspondent and single woman, In the Mountains There are No Masters (Schildts & Söderströms 2009), which traces her journey from North Caucasus to Georgia, and They’re Not All There, Those Russians (Schildts & Söderströms 2008), which offers snapshots of Russian culture. Her works have been translated into Finnish, Russian, Norwegian, Swedish and Ukrainian.
